Special Programs and Projects

In addition to plantings throughout the entire growing season, the Beautification Commission sponsors the Arbor Day Seedlings Give-Away and the Tree City USA Certification in April.

Arbor Day

The beautification commissions of the City of Northville and Northville Township together sponsor the Arbor Day Seedlings Give-Away on a Saturday morning in April of each year. The seedlings are available free to township and city residents, as well as to residents of the Northville School District. Varieties given away in the past include: Austrian Pine, White Pine, Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Red Oak, Green Ash, Mountain Maple, Redosier Dogwood, and Ninebark.

Tree City USA Certification

Tree City USA is a community improvement project sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters, USDA Forest Service, US Conference of Mayors, and the National League of Cities.

The program is designed to recognize communities that effectively manage their public tree resources based on the following four standards:

  1. Community Tree Ordinance.
  2. Tree/Board Commission. Beautification Commission members may serve on this board along with staff to assist the City Manager in administering a comprehensive tree management program for the care of trees on public property.
  3. Community Forest Program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita to be used for planting, trimming and removal of trees.
  4. An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation.
