2003 Renovations
Allen Terrace, which was built in 1978, is in the process of undergoing major renovations. Renovations began in August of 2003, with
completion expected by August of 2004. The following projects are funded with a $1.375 million bond, approved by City voters in November
2003.
- Apartment kitchen renovations are complete.
- New energy-efficient windows and door walls are complete.
- New apartment heating/air conditioning units.
- A new boiler has been installed.
- Renovation of the original building elevator. A second elevator was installed in 2001.
- Activity Room renovations are complete.
- Parking lot renovations will begin in the end of June 2004.
As of December 1, 2003 all Allen Terrace residents are enjoying newly remodeled kitchens, which include:
- Dark kitchen cabinets have been replaced with light oak cabinetry featuring corner lazy Susans.
- Green and harvest gold countertops have been replaced with neutral countertops
- featuring bull-nose edges and overhangs, which will accommodate bar stools.
- Matching cutting boards are being made for each resident from the sink cut outs.
- New stainless steel sinks have been put in with water sprayers.
- Stainless steel backsplashes have been installed behind the stoves.
- Hood fans have been installed over the stoves.
- Old flooring was replaced with light colored, easily maintained VCT (vinyl composition tile) tile.
- GFI outlets have been added.
- Kitchen walls are freshly painted.
All kitchen renovations were done by Rapid Redec, Inc. To keep inconvenience to a minimum, old cabinets, counter tops, sinks, and
flooring were removed and replaced in one-day’s time. Residents were without cooking facilities for 3 days as the kitchen was
being painted and moldings were installed. As each resident received their new kitchens, accommodations were made available in an
unoccupied apartment. Furniture was donated through Civic Concern and meals were made available through Michelle’s Hearth, Main
Street Catering, Little Italy, and Jet’s Pizza.
Old kitchen cabinets were placed for sale with about 40% being sold. Packing boxes and meals were purchased with the $1600
received through the cabinet sales.
Photos of the renovations are available in our Photo Album.
