CITY NEWS
MESSAGES:
A final congratulatory event celebrating the 50th anniversary of
Northville as a city will be held December 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the
Northville Senior Community Center. A short program will commence at
7:00 p.m. The regular scheduled City Council meeting
will begin at 7:30 p.m. The first Council meeting of the City
of Northville was held 50 years ago on December 19th.
City Manager Gary Word is leaving the City for a position as the
Village Manager of Islamorada, Florida. A farewell open house
reception is planned for Wednesday, January 4th from 5 p.m. to 7
p.m. in the Northville Senior Community Center, 303 West Main
Street. All are cordially invited.
City Hall offices will be closed for the season's holidays:
- Friday, December 23rd
- Monday,
December 26th
- Friday,
December 30th
- Monday,
January 2nd
Holiday schedule for trash collection is as follows. No
collection on Monday, December 26th. Trash normally collected
on Mondays will be collected Tuesday, December 27th. Trash
normally collected on Tuesdays will be collected Wednesday, December
28th. Subsequently, no collection will take place on Monday,
January 2nd. Trash normally collected on Mondays will be
collected Tuesday, January 3rd. Trash normally collected on
Tuesdays will be collected Wednesday, January 4th.
50th Anniversary Banners (presently found on downtown lampposts)
will be available for purchase after the holidays. The banners
are available at $25 each and can be reserved by contacting
Cindy Abar
or calling (249) 349-1300, Ext. 1964.
Property tax bills have been mailed to all City residences.
Taxes are payable without penalty through February 14, 2006.

ELECTION TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH - Two of the four seats on the
Northville City Council are up for election. The four
candidates vying for the two seats are: Jim Allen, Michele
Fecht, Kevin Hartshorne, and Larry Parks. The office of Mayor
is also up for election. Mayor Christopher Johnson is running
unopposed.
Additionally, the Northville Public Schools is requesting a
millage proposal for operational purposes of 3.0 mills to allow
Northville Public Schools to levy not more than 18 mills through
2012.
The polls are open from 7:00am to 8:00pm. Precinct #1
(for voters residing in Wayne County) is located at City Hall, 215
West Main Street. Precinct #2 (for voters residing in Oakland
County) is located at the Amerman School, 847 North Center.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20TH, 7 PM
The Northville Record will be hosting a "Candidates' Night" at
Northville City Hall Council Chambers on Thursday, October 20th at
7:00pm. Two seats of the City Council are up for election on
November 8th. Four candidates are vying for the two seats.
The term of Council Member is for four years. The candidates
are: Jim Allen, Michele Fecht, Kevin Hartshorne, and Larry
Parks. The position of Mayor is up for election with
Christopher Johnson running unopposed.
The format of the evening will be answers by the candidates to
previously submitted questions. Additionally, the format will
allow for questions from the audience.

PARTICIPATE IN GREAT ESCAPE!
This year, National Fire Prevention Week is held the week of October
9th. As part of fire education, members of the Northville City Fire
Department have gone to the local schools and taught children how to
develop an escape plan to be used at home. On Wednesday, Oct. 12,
at 7:00pm the siren will sound throughout the City. At this
time, children are to practice their plan with their families.
After a successful practice, the children and families are invited
to the Northville Fire Station (at 215 West Main) to discuss their
plan with the firefighters and practice more fire safety
skills. Refreshments will be served, and a drawing will be held for
prizes donated by local businesses and residents. The Fire
Station will be open all day this week through Saturday for visits
from the public. All are welcomed!

SENIOR COMMUNITY CENTER AVAILABLE FOR HOLIDAY GATHERINGS!
Northville Parks and Recreation is accepting reservations for
rentals of the Senior Community Center during the holiday season.
Room capacity begins at 20 in the smaller meetings rooms, and up to
120 in the large banquet room. Kitchen facilities are available. For
dates and rental rates, contact the Parks and Recreation Department
at (248) 349-0203, Ext. 1401.
PLAYGROUND TEMPORARILY CLOSED! The Ford Field playground, known
as Fort Griswold, is undergoing power washing and resealing
maintenance. The playground will be closed to the public until
approximately October 21st.
TRASH PICKUP COMPLAINTS - Missed pickup? Kindly leave a message
for either the Public Works Department no later than 10:00am the
next day or call the City's trash contractor, Painter & Ruthenberg,
immediately at (313) 561-0303.
AUTOMATIC PAYMENT FOR UTILITY BILLS - To include the City of
Northville water bill in your list of automatic deductions from your
checking or savings account, fill out the form that is found by

FARMERS' MARKET - There are only a few more weeks to take
advantage of Northville's Farmers' Market. Visit the market on
Thursday from 8:00am to 3:00pm at the corner of Seven and Sheldon

CITY'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY! Come to the party being held
behind City Hall on Saturday, August 27th from 2:00pm to 6:00pm.
Free ice cream and cake, music by Steve and the Dittilies,
children's games, vintage fire truck, DPW equipment, community
mural-making. Come and be part of a huge "50" and then sign

DRIVE SAFELY in school zones! Please use caution when
driving near schools, bus stops, and crossing locations.
School speed limits are in effect on Eight Mile, and crossing guards
are posted at various locations near schools. Warning: fines
are doubled for any moving violation within a school area. "Double
the fine" applies during the entire school day, from 30 minutes
before the start of school until 30 minutes after dismissal.
AUGUST 31ST is the last day for submitting payment for Summer
2005 taxes without penalty. Tax payments received after the
31st will incur penalty and interest charges. (Payments sent
through the mail will not incur a penalty if the postmark is no
later than August 31st.)
LABOR DAY. City Hall offices will be closed Monday,
September 5th and reopen at 8:00am on Tuesday, September 6th.
TRASH DELAYED. Due to the Labor Day holiday, trash pickup
will be delayed by one day. Monday's trash will be picked up
on Tuesday. Tuesday's trash will be picked up on Wednesday.

HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION
Redford Township will accept hazardous waste material from City of
Northville residents on Saturday, August 6th from 8:00am to 2:00pm
at the Redford Public Services Complex, 12200 Beech Daly Road, south

HOME IMPROVEMENTS NEED PERMIT
When installing an underground sprinkler system, a plumbing permit
is required from the Building Department. A permit is also
required when replacing a roof, installing a hot tub, installing a
deck, a fence, etc. Call the Building Department at (248) 449-9902
to check on permit requirements of any and all work done on your
home or premises.
HIGHLIGHTS:

ELECTION - AUGUST 2nd
Please take notice that an election will be held in the City of
Northville, County of Wayne, Michigan, on Tuesday, August 2, 2005.
The polls open at 7:00am and close at 8:00pm for the purpose
of voting on the following proposal: The purpose of this
election is to consider the Wayne County Parks Millage Renewal.
In the City of Northville, only Wayne County qualified electors are
eligible to vote on this proposal. City of Northville Oakland
County electors are not affected by this millage renewal proposal.
SATURDAY, JULY 30TH - The City Clerk's office, City of Northville
Municipal Building, 215 W. Main Street, will be open from 9:00am to
2:00pm on Saturday July 30, 2005 for the purpose of obtaining
absentee ballots and receiving absentee ballot applications for
ballots to be mailed. On Monday, August 1, 2005, until 4:00pm,
qualified electors requesting an absentee ballot must appear in
person and vote the ballot at the City Clerk's office.

50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION - Northville is celebrating 50 years
since Northville Village incorporated to the City of Northville.
Local artist, Caroline Dunphy, has designed a commemorative
watercolor poster depicting Northville's past 50 years. To

CITY NEWS - July 4th - 9th
MESSAGES:
WATER RESTRICTIONS: Residents of the City of Northville, in
cooperation with Northville Township, and the City and Township of
Plymouth, are being asked to voluntarily restrict their outdoor
water use. It is requested that residences and businesses with
odd numbered addresses (ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9) conduct outdoor
water use only on odd numbered dates. Those with addresses
ending in an even number (2, 4, 5, 8, 0) are asked to water lawns,
flowers, wash cars, etc. on even numbered dates.
Additionally, it is requested that the outdoor water use be
limited to the hours between 10:00am and 4:00pm or during the night.
Please avoid watering between 6:00am and 9:00am. Water
consumption is often at its peak during this time, and observing
water use restrictions enables customers to avoid low-pressure
problems.
PARADE: Northville's Independence Day Parade starts at
10:00am at Main and Griswold on Monday, the 4th. Come and
enjoy the parade and the fun activities at Ford Field right after
the parade! (Sorry, no fireworks.)

Monday's trash will be picked up Tuesday; Tuesday's trash will be

CITY NEWS: June 26 - July 4th
MESSAGES:
PARADE - Independence Day Parade will begin at 10::00am in
downtown Northville on Monday July 4th. The Parade committee
is still looking for volunteers to show their community spirit.
If you, your family, or friends would like to be a part of this
annual patriotic event, please contact the Northville Community
Foundation at 248-374-0200.
FIREWORKS - There will be NO fireworks in the Northville
community area. For information on locations and dates of
nearby fireworks display, please visit www.michiganfireworks.com.
TRASH PICKUP will be delayed by one day in the City of Northville
for the work week of July 4-8th.
FIRST SATURDAY - DPW Yard is open the first Saturday of every
month (July 2nd) from 11:00am to 3:00pm to accept regularly
acceptable recycling materials and yard brush (no charge), and trash
and large bulk items (nominal charge). The Yards is located at
650 Doheny Drive.
2005 SUMMER TAX BILLS will be mailed Thursday, June 30th to all
City of Northville property owners. Tax payments are due July
1st through August 31st. Tax payments received after August
31st will incur interest and penalty charges. PLEASE NOTE:
Per Senate Bill 1112, the 2005 Summer Tax bill includes one-third of
the 2005 County Operating Millage. (Previously, the entire
County Operating Millage for the year was included in the Winter Tax
bill.) Subsequently, the Winter 2005 Tax bill will include
only two-thirds of the 2005 County Operating Millage.

* GRISWOLD CONSTRUCTION: Under the direction of Wayne
County, construction will begin Monday, June 13th on Griswold
between Eight Mile and Main Street. During the construction
period, Griswold will become a one-way street. For the first
six weeks, only southbound traffic will be allowed while work is
done on the northbound traffic lane. During the second phase
of construction, Griswold will be open for northbound traffic only
while the southbound traffic lane is being constructed. Completion
is expected in early September 2005.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ACTIVITIES
* Parade: The Memorial Day Parade will take place on
Monday, May 30th and will begin at 10:00am. The parade route begins
at Griswold and Main, proceed west on Main to Wing, south on Wing to
Cady, west on Cady to the Cady Street Cemetery, then south on First
Street to Seven Mile and into Rural Hill Cemetery. Memorial
services will be held at Rural Hill Cemetery.
* Flower Sale: Northville's 18th Annual Flower Sale will be
held Friday and Saturday, May 27th and 28th from 9:00am to 6:00pm.
Main Street will be closed to traffic between Hutton and Center
Street. A variety of annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and
garden ornaments will be available for sale.
* Plant Swap: Northville's Historical Society is holding
its 13th Annual Plant Swap at Mill Race Village on Saturday, May
28th from 8:00am to noon. Northville's DPW will have composted

* City Hall Closed: Northville City Hall offices will be
closed Monday, May 30th and will reopen on Tuesday, May 31st at
8:00am.
* Downtown Shopping: For an electronic tour and information

- The City's Downtown Development Authority will be conducting
meetings with the public to review the data presented by the Gibbs
Planning Group and receive citizen input regarding the future of

REMINDERS:
- 2005 dog licenses are now available for all City dogs.
Rabies vaccination must be current. Fees are $11 and $8.

Week of January 16th - 22nd
MESSAGES:
- City Hall offices will be OPEN on Monday, January 17th, Martin
Luther King Day. However, the City Council meeting, normally
scheduled for the third Monday of the month, is scheduled for
Tuesday, January 18th at 7:30pm in the Council Chambers.
- Trash pickup will take place as normally scheduled for Monday
and Tuesday, January 17th and 18th. This is the last
week to place Christmas trees, wreaths, and roping for trash pickup
until composting pickup resumes in April.
- The annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will be held on
Monday, January 17th. A candelight walk from the First
Presbyterian Church to the Northville Senior Community Center will
begin at 7 p.m. The program provided at the Community Center
includes vocal music performances by Northville high school and
middle school students, remarks from local elected leaders, and
readings of Dr. King's speeches by local students.
Refreshments will be served following the program. For more

- 2005 dog licenses are now available for all City dogs. Rabies
vaccination must be current. Fees are $11 unless proof of
neuter/spay is provided, which reduces the fee to $8. The 8th
Annual Lucky Dog contest is underway. One lucky dog from among
those registered last year has been selected at random and, upon
timely renewal, will become the proud winner of a special lucky dog
prize and a feature in Northville's Record and Journal newspapers.

pickup for recycling. Place your "clean" (no tinsel,
ornaments, plastic snow) tree in front of your home for pickup.
After Tuesday, Christmas trees will be removed and placed in the

DODGE BALL:
High school dodge ball is scheduled at the Recreation Center at
Hillside on Saturday, December 17th, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Pay $4 at
the door.
THEATER:
Northville Youth Theater presents "The Princess and the Pea,"
Friday, December 16th at 7 p.m., and Saturday, December 17th at 2:30
p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Senior Community Center, 303 W. Main. The
tickets of $5 can be purchased at the Recreation Center at Hillside
or at the door (if available). Come and enjoy this delightful play

NEW YEAR'S EVE:
Parks and Recreation's annual Northville Nite event to be held at
the Recreation Center at Hillside. Giant toys, carnival games,
coffee house, crafts, swimming, and dinner by Max & Erma's of Novi
will make this a memorable New Year's for the whole family. Tickets
are $5 for tots, $10 for children ages 2 to 12, and $15 for ages 13
and above. Hurry! This is a popular event and tickets go quickly!

SWIMMING: Open swim is available at the Northville High
School for $2.50 per person. Tuesday: 7:30pm to 8:30pm.
Wednesday: noon to 1:00pm. Saturday: 1:30pm to 2:30pm.
BASKETBALL: There are still openings for the July
18-22 Basketball Camp instructed by Sports Around Town. For
boys and girls ages 6-12, this week long camp includes skill
development and LOTS of fun! Resident fee: $150. Held at
the Senior Community Center.
BOATER SAFETY: July 25th and 27th.
Upon successful completion of this class, participants ages 12 and
up will receive a Boater's Safety Certificate from the Oakland
County Sheriff's Department, Marine Division. This certificate
will allow anyone 12 years and older to operate a boat and anyone 14
years and older to operate a personal watercraft. Must attend
both classes to receive certification. Parents attending with
their child are required to register as a student. Class will
be held at the Northville Senior Community Center from 6:00pm to
9:00pm. Fee is $15 per person (additional non-resident fees

CEDAR POINT: It's that time again! Middle
school (and up) students are invited to travel with Northville Parks
and Recreation to Cedar Point in luxury air-conditioned motor
coaches. Pickup and drop off will be at the Recreation Center
at Hillside on Friday, June 17th. Buses will leave
at 7:00am and will return approximately 11:00pm. Please note:
students will not be under constant supervision. Fee is $65
per person, additional non-resident fees apply. Complimentary

Enjoy a wondering evening for the love of art and
culture at Genitti's Italian restaurant on Saturday, April 30th from
6:30pm to 9:30pm. The dinner-auction will feature Genitti's
famous 7-course meal and a unique silent auction.
"Art Out of the Box" will showcase a collection of
creative box works from local artists and organizations. More
than 30 boxes have been designed, created, and embellished by some
of the area's finest artists, in all price ranges, and a wide
variety of styles and themes. Contributing
artists/organizations include NHS art teacher Michael Hoffman,
sculptural artist Paul Vertrees, potter Ken Barnes, artist Prudy
Vannier, painter Gail Thomas, glass artist Paula Shoulders, oil
painter Darcel Deneau, Herb Society of West Bloomfield, Orin
Jewelers, and the Northville Garden Club.
Proceeds and donations will benefit the Northville Art
House. Tickets are $50 per person and seating is limited.

* Flower Arranging: Ikebana, the beautiful
art of Japanese flower arranging, is being offered at the Recreation
Center at Hillside. Class begins Tuesday, April 19th and will

* Making Paper Books: Children (ages 7 and up)
will make 5 or 6 different books using card stock, paper, and other
easy-to-find items. Books will include origami books, accordion

* Fresco Workshop: Learn the techniques of the
classic art of buon fresco painting with Michigan artists and
instructors, Deb and Rick Zuccarini. You will grind pigments,
mix plaster, and paint your own fresco panel and jar lid. For
the final session, students will meet at the Detroit Institute of
Art to study Rivera's courtyard. Deb and Rick Zuccarini are
presently teaching at Schoolcraft College and have completed
numerous commissioned Fresco murals and have appeared in multiple

Youth Basketball League sign-ups going on now!
Spring Leagues will be developed for Boys in grades 8 & 9 and grades
10 - 12. Registration for these Spring Leagues will run from
February 22 - March 11 (or until filled). A $10 late fee will be
assessed after March 11. Practices will begin on April 4th and
games will begin on April 9th. Each League will play an eight game
schedule that will end on May 21st. Costs for the Spring Program
will run from $100 - $110. Coaches are needed to support these
Leagues. Your child will play free if you volunteer to be a

American Red Cross Babysitter Training: The American
Red Cross Babysitter Training course offers youth the opportunity to
learn the skills that every parent looks for in a babysitter. This
6-1/2 hour course provides youth with safety, basic child care, safe
play, first aid and critical emergency action skills. Other topics
included are interviewing for a babysitting job, diapering and
feeding techniques. Youth must be 11-years-old to receive a
certificate. Fee includes course training manual and
babysitter first aid kit. Students must bring a sack lunch (no
refrigeration available). This course fills up fast!!! Next
available class date is Saturday, March 12, 9:00am - 3:30pm.

Parks and Recreation is offering an exciting, fun, and NEW class for
kids 9-12 years. "In Motion" will be full of fun activities
that promote health, teamwork, strength, balance, and coordination.

family trip to Joe Louis Arena to see U of M and MSU play hockey on

CHESS - Calling all Chess enthusiasts! Join our 2nd
Annual Chess Tournament on Saturday, January 22, 2005 from 9:00 a.m.

5th. Trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each
grade level. Students must know how to play chess and will play

There are still openings in all of our fitness classes. Start
2005 with a exercise routine; we offer a wide variety of classes

CLASSES: ChaMP Educational Services will once
again offer a variety of classes for youth. Newspaper and Cooking
are coming up January 22, 2005. The Newspaper class is for grades
6-8 and will focus on writing skills and perhaps become a
journalist. Cooking will be offered for grades 3-5 and each week the
students will prepare a different dish and will open their

Northville Parks and Recreation will be taking a luxury motor coach
to the Palace of Auburn Hills on February 5, 2005 to enjoy a great
afternoon with Nemo and the gang. This stunning ice skating
production will take you down under into an amazing underwater world
to join Nemo, Marlin and Dory in a humorous journey of friendship
and fun. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Show time is 3:30pm, bus departs at 2:00pm. Fees are $22 for

- JUNIOR SKI AND SNOWBOARD CLUB!!
Skiers and snowboarders in the 4th and 5th grade are invited to join
this club and find out what the buzz is all about! Parents are
welcome to attend as chaperones. Weather permitting we will
take two afternoon trips to Mt. Brighton on February 15th and
17th. Registration fee is $45 for one trip and $80 for
two trips. Non-resident fees apply. These trips will be
for Junior Club members only. Each student will receive a Club
ID and instructional lessons. Luxury motor coach
transportation is also included. Helmets will be required for
all participants and chaperones.
- TODDLE TIME!
Attention: Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Nannies! Beat those
winter blahs. Your toddler will have a blast during this
drop-in open gym time. This is a wonderful opportunity for toddlers
to learn through play. Tots can run, jump, play ball, laugh
and giggle with other tots in a safe atmosphere. Also the
little ones will begin learning socialization skills. Children
must be accompanied by an adult for the entire time. Please
bring a toy your toddler can ride or push. A limited amount of
equipment will be available on site during this unstructured
playtime. Please pay building attendant $3 per child and bring
correct change, adults are free. Price is for 2 hours of gym
time. Sorry, no pro-rated time fees. Toddle Time is held
on Tuesdays until March 22 from 10:00am to noon at the Senior
Community Center Gym.

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS!
Girl's Night Out - December 1st
A special evening awaits ladies of all ages. Bring your
mother, daughter or girlfriend and spend the evening holiday
shopping in downtown Northville. Many of the shops will have
extended hours. Between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., select shops
will feature special events and store discounts with wine and hors
d'oeuvres being served. Shoppers can sign up for a chance to
win a one of eight $15 gift certificates good for merchandise in the
store issuing the gift certificate. You do not need to be present
