Learn About How an Orchestra Works!

The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra (PSO) will be using the Northville High School Auditorium for two of their 2006-07 Season performances.  Northville Parks and Recreation is excited about providing two informational programs to our residents so that they may learn more about the PSO (one of our area's best kept secrets!) as they offer concerts in our "own backyard."   The first program will be held next week, as follows:

An Insider's View of Orchestral Concerts Plymouth Symphony Orchestra Family Program
Tuesday, September 12 - 7:00pm - 8:30pm at the Senior Community Center
$4 adults (residents); children over age 6 are free

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to play in an orchestra? Do you know what creates the passion in classical music and why the orchestral sound can be so powerful? Not your ordinary music appreciation class, the "Insider's View" will take you behind the scenes into the crazy and wonderful orchestra world in general and tell you all about the Plymouth Symphony coming to Northville this year.  Instructor, PSO Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn draws upon her many years of professional experience as a conductor and orchestral player to give a unique and fresh perspective. While imparting the "tricks of the trade" and other insights about "concert going," the class will give you the tools to make your next orchestra concert experience one that is exciting, engaging and, most of all, fun for children school age and above!  Light refreshments will be served.

Please register by 4:00pm on September 12 so that appropriate refreshments can be available.   Registration information is available in the Northville Parks and Recreation Fall Activities Brochure found here.

Group Exercise Class Being Offered!

Northville's Water Wheel Health Center has become Planet Fitness, effective July 24, 2006.  Planet Fitness programs do not include group exercise classes. As a result of this, owners Chris and Ellen Klebba, long time supporters of the partnership between their company and Northville Parks and Recreation, are donating their group exercise equipment to the Parks and Recreation Department.  In addition, many of the Water Wheel fitness instructors will begin teaching their classes at Parks and Recreation facilities the week of July 31st.

With the conversion of Water Wheel to Planet Fitness, Northville Parks and Recreation used this opportunity to evaluate their group fitness program and expand their offerings by following the successful model previously offered by Water Wheel.  A new monthly schedule of group fitness classes will be created with a wide variety of class offerings. Participants can purchase a monthly pass at $45 (resident rate), allowing participants to attend as many classes as they want during the month.  In addition, there will be a "drop in" class fee of $5 per class, for residents who want to try a class without paying the monthly fee.

The August group fitness schedule is now available at Northville Parks and Recreation offices and on the website at www.northvilleparksandrec.org.  For additional information, contact Northville Parks and Recreation at (248) 349-0203.

"Under the Big Top" offers three circus themed art camps: "The Greatest Show on Earth", "The Circus Train", and "Lions, Tigers, Elephants, & Clowns". During each week, children will have the opportunity to explore a variety of media and art styles as they use their imagination to create their own fantasy circus.

Four adult workshops will be offered during the month of August, including "The Pastel Experience" taught by well-known oil, pastel, and drawing instructor Jim Riopelle. Katra, one of Awakening's most popular teachers will be teaching a colored pencil class entitled "In the Garden with Colored Pencils" and "Figure Painting" for acrylic, watercolor or gouache artists.
