DIRECTOR’S REPORT
During the month of January, Northville Youth Assistance (NYA)
had six referrals of youths – five from families and one from the
Novi Police. In addition, four high school students and one middle
school student were referred for community service in lieu of
suspension.
In January, I attended one city department head meeting; a United
Way Community Services Citizen’s Advisory Committee meeting; a
workshop on "Teen Raising, Hair Raising"; a school social
worker/psychologist meeting; a workshop on stress reduction; an
Asset Committee meeting; a therapist invitational at Northville High
School; a United Way Community Service America’s Promise meeting; a
meeting for the Conrad Family Foundation and the Service Learning
Citizen Advisory Committee.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on January 20th
was a huge success – over 550 people attended. The welcomes by the
township supervisor and the mayor were well received, the choir
groups were extraordinary and the speech readers all did an
excellent job. Ian Hill, our keynote speaker, was superb. We heard
nothing but rave reviews from students, parents and guests on Mr.
Hill’s message. Students at both Hillside and Meads Mill Middle
School had the opportunity to hear him speak the following day. They
all seemed to truly enjoy his message.
Joanne Colligan, a teacher from Amerman Elementary School,
conducted an in-service training on reading for our volunteer
tutors. They all walked away with a great deal of knowledge on
reading techniques.
Scott Speilman from the Journal recently interviewed me on all of
the programs NYA is offering. He said he would also highlight the
recruitment of mentors. The new training starts on March 13th.
Entrance signs to the city will be put up at the end of February.
Thank you for your continued support.
