Mandatory Installation of Smoke Alarms

As of March 14, 2006, the State of Michigan per 2004 Public Act 64 and 2004 Public Act 65 of required updates to the 2003 Michigan Building Code, 2003 Michigan Residential Code and 2003 Michigan Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings requires the installation of smoke alarms.

The new smoke alarm rules set a minimum standard for all buildings, structures and homes built prior to November 6, 1974.

The State of Michigan requires all buildings, structures and homes be brought into compliance no later than March 14, 2007.

The intent of this rule is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of this state.

These rules only pertain to buildings constructed prior to November 6, 1974.

The amended rules of the 2003 State Codes may be downloaded and printed form the bureau’s website at www.michigan.gov/bccfs.

Questions regarding the updated rule/code should be directed to the state of Michigan, Bureau of Construction Codes & Fire Safety at 517-241-6479.
