Installation of Smoke Alarms
As of March 14, 2006, the State of Michigan per 2004 Public Act
64 and 2004 Public Act 65 of required updates to the 2003 Michigan
Building Code, 2003 Michigan Residential Code and 2003 Michigan
Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings requires the installation
of smoke alarms.
The new smoke alarm rules set a minimum standard for all
buildings, structures and homes built prior to November 6, 1974.
The State of Michigan requires all buildings, structures and
homes be brought into compliance no later than March 14, 2007.
The intent of this rule is to protect the health, safety and
welfare of the citizens of this state.
These rules only pertain to buildings constructed prior to
November 6, 1974.
The amended rules of the 2003 State Codes may be downloaded and
