The City of Northville Code of Ordinances requires that all businesses register with the City. No business may operate in the City without first obtaining a business license. Each licensee shall post and maintain the license issued in a location where it may be seen at all times. Every licensee shall permit all reasonable inspections and at all times comply with the laws and regulations applicable to such business and all applicable ordinances and regulations of the City.  Every licensee must notify the City Clerk at least two weeks prior to going out of business. The City Clerk processes all licenses allowed by ordinance, including a horse-drawn carriage license.Chapters 6, 18 and 94 of the City of Northville Code of Ordinances provides licensing information relative to General Business, Commercial Amusement Device, Peddler, Pool / Billiard Room, Solicitor, Taxicab, Taxicab Driver, Horse-Drawn Carriage, Massage Establishment, and Massage Therapist.  To view these ordinances, click here.

State Law requires that any business that conducts a "going out of business" sale or any sale indicating that the business is liquidating their inventory and/or leaving the location, to register their sale with the City Clerk. A complete, itemized inventory, along with the appropriate fees, must be submitted to the City Clerk before beginning the sale.

Business License Registration Renewal

Business Licenses expire annually on December 31st. The City of Northville Code of Ordinances requires all businesses in the City to register annually. Courtesy renewal notices are mailed in November of each year to all businesses that were licensed the previous year. All renewal applications are due by January 1st; after this date license renewals are considered delinquent and are subject to late fees. Businesses that do not obtain or renew their license are in violation of City Ordinance and may receive an ordinance violation.
