Solid Waste Service

Residential Solid Waste Collection Program
Commercial Solid Waste Collection Program

Residential Solid Waste Collection Program

The City of Northville contracts out solid waste collection services to a private hauler.  Under contract, Waste Management collects trash, recycling materials, and compost materials from residents on a weekly basis.

City residents north of Eight Mile Road are collected on Mondays and residents south of Eight Mile Road are collected on Tuesdays.

All residents are asked to have everything out by 7:00am on the morning of their collection day.

Rates

The monthly charge for residential trash/recycling/compost collection services is $12.72 per month.  Residents are charged two months in advance; and this charge is placed on the resident’s water bill.

Cancellation

Residents have the right to opt out of the City’s Solid Waste Collection Program, but must have their solid waste collected from a solid waste collection contractor licensed with the City of Northville. Official notice of a resident’s desire to be removed from the City’s Solid Waste Collection Program can be made by completing a Cancellation of City Residential Solid Waste Collection Services Form and delivering it to the Department of Public Works office at 215 W. Main Street, Northville, MI 48167.

Large Item Pick Up

Occasionally residents have large items that need to be disposed of.  Items such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, steel bathtubs, couches, chairs, mattresses, box springs, televisions, lamps, tables, etc. must be set out at the curb with your trash before 7:00am on your regularly scheduled trash day.  If the items are not picked up within 24 hours after your trash has been collected, please call Waste Management at (800) 796-9696 .  If bad weather threatens, cover upholstery with plastic to keep it dry and light.  DO NOT pack the appliances in cardboard boxes.  Appliances may be picked up separately and recycled.  NOTE:  Northville Ordinance requires refrigerator and freezer doors to be removed before they are set out at the curb.

Freon-Bearing Appliances

If residents wish to have Freon-bearing appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners collected, they must first purchase a sticker to place on these items for collection.  The fee for the sticker, which is available at City Hall, is $27.  This fee is used to cover the cost of removing the Freon from these items as is required by state and federal law. City Hall is open Monday – Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm.

Carpeting

Carpeting will be picked up at the curb ONLY if it is rolled up and tied with heavy twine, and the tied rolls are not longer than 3’ in length, not weighing over 50 pounds per roll.  Large pieces of carpeting that are too long or untied will not be picked up.  Soft padding will be taken in large sections if rolled, tied, and kept dry.  Small pieces may be neatly tied or bagged.  A large piece of disposable plastic wrapped and tied over these materials will help keep them dry and light when bad weather threatens.

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees, wreaths, roping and garland will be collected as trash following the Christmas holiday.

Dangerous Chemicals and Materials

Do not place any containers with motor oil, liquid paint, poisonous or caustic chemicals, gas tanks, propane tanks, medical wastes, needles, asbestos, or ammunition inside a plastic bag or hide them in any type of receptacle.  These may explode upon compaction or in other ways cause serious injuries.

Hazardous Materials

The City of Northville offers annual free Household Hazardous Waste Days every spring and fall.  A separate mailing will be sent to residents stating date and location. Click here for more information.

Items Not Collected

Waste Management is contracted to pickup once a week your residential solid waste.  They do not pick up construction materials such as sand, bricks, concrete blocks, lumber, cement, stones, drywall, gravel, roofing materials, glass doors, windows, paneling, countertops, flooring, etc.  Metal sheds, garage doors, swing sets, picnic tables, car parts, inflated or mounted tires, railroad ties, sod, dirt of any kind, tree stumps, tree trunks, oil base paint, lawn mowers, pool heaters, furnaces, or other large outside items will not be picked up.  Your may call Waste Management for information on special pickups or these items may be disposed of at the landfill located at 6 Mile & Napier.  Please call Only Landfill at 888-443-1717 for more information.

Frozen Trash

Workers do the best they can under the circumstances.  If trash is frozen to the ground, the crews will not take it.  Due to safety considerations, crews cannot “dig out” frozen materials in trash cans or recycling bins.  Remember, all material must be curbside and prepared for pickup by 7:00am regardless of the time it is usually picked up.

Heavy Snow

Waste Management will send trucks out on schedule except in extreme conditions.  Workers will do the best they can under the circumstances.  Place rubbish on TOP of snow.  Bags and cans must be accessible from the road.  Dark bags are easiest to see.  Remember to have your trash out on time.

RECYCLABLES:  Due to safety considerations, crews cannot “dig out” frozen recycling bins - they will take what they can.  NOTE: Some services may be temporarily suspended due to weather/road conditions.  Roads that ice over may not be serviced if it is unsafe for truck traffic.

General

Please prepare all materials properly for speedy, efficient pickup.  Proper packaging will help to cut costs to residents and reduce injury to the sanitation workers.

All material must be placed at the front curb or roadside and placed so that it does not interfere with mail delivery.  If there is a ditch in front of your property, it must be placed on the road side of the ditch, and not on your property side.  After collection, remove receptacles with 12 hours pursuant to Ordinance.

Trash Containers

Containers should be up to 35 gallon garbage cans of metal or plastic construction with 2 handles and tight fitting covers.  Plastic bags with a thickness of not less than 1.5 mils will be suitable in lieu of containers.  NO SINGLE RECEPTACLE OR BAG SHALL WEIGH MORE THAN 50 POUNDS WHEN FILLED.  No cardboard boxes or paper bags can be used as containers.

Heavy Rubbish:  NO CONTAINERS OVER 50 POUNDS OR OVER 35 GALLONS IN SIZE.  If a worker cannot life a bag or can, it will be left at the curb.

Time of Set Out

Place all trash, recyclables, and compost (in season) at the curb before 7:00am on the day of the pickup regardless of what time you believe it will be picked up.

Holidays

Trash collection is not scheduled on the following holidays:  New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.  If your collection day falls on or after the holiday, our trash pickup will be delayed one day that week.

TopCommercial Solid Waste Collection Program

The City of Northville provides solid waste collection services to businesses, residents, and other entities within the City’s commercial district.  Strategically located in 5 locations throughout downtown Northville are 6 and 8 yard dumpsters.  These dumpsters (brown dumpsters for trash and green dumpsters for cardboard) are emptied six times per week, Monday through Saturday.

Customers are asked to follow 3 basic rules established for the program.

  1. No large bulk items are to be placed in or next to the dumpster.  Large items or large quantities of items not normally considered trash such as basement/apartment/attic clean-outs, building remodeling materials, etc. are not covered under this program.
  2. Customers are asked not to place trash in front of or next to the dumpsters.  If the trash cannot go in or on top of the dumpster, customers are asked to hold the trash at their business until the dumpster is emptied (emptied daily).
  3. Customers are asked to break down all cardboard boxes before they are placed into the cardboard dumpsters.

Rates

This program is completely funded by the users of the service.  Like the Residential Solid Waste Collection Program, the Commercial Solid Waste Collection Program is not subsidized by the General Fund.  The cost for this service is charged to customers who use the system based on the following categories.

Restaurants $169.25 per month
Retail Food Sales $  72.50 per month
Churches & Halls $  72.50 per month
Retail Sales $  54.50 per month
Services   $  43.75 per month
Residential   $  18.00 per month

These categories and their associated charges are based on historic usage.
