History and
Organization
The
Village of Northville was organized in March of 1867, and in the
earliest days fire protection was a matter in which all residents
were actively involved. One of the very first ordinances
adopted by the Village Trustees required that anyone occupying a
building in the Village keep on hand “three good pails and one
ladder” for fire fighting purposes.
By 1890, the Village had grown to the point where an organized
Fire Department was necessary. Chief A.M. Whitehead and about
30 volunteers from the community trained on the use of the new
equipment, a 60 gallon, two-wheel, horse-drawn chemical wagon.
Today, the equipment, training and range of services provided are
very different from that of over 100 years ago. But the City
of Northville Fire Department still relies on the willingness of
members of the community to step forward and take on the
responsibility of training and then responding to the community’s
emergency service needs.
The
Department is today headed by Chief James M. Allen. Chief
Allen works for the Department on a full-time basis. Under his
command are 29 part-time, on-call Fire Fighters and EMS personnel.
All of the Department's personnel are certified at the Fire Fighter
II level -- the level of training required by the State of Michigan
for personnel on full-time career departments. In addition,
90% of the Department's personnel hold
EMS licenses from the State of Michigan.
The
Fire Department is an active participant in a number of different
inter-agency organizations. These include the Western Wayne
Fire Mutual Aid Association, whose members include the fire
departments of Western Wayne County and Southwestern Oakland County.
Mutual Aid Association members can call upon each other for
assistance in time of need, and the Association sponsors an
inter-agency hazardous materials incident response
team to which the City of Northville Fire Department
contributes personnel. The Department is also a participant in
HEMS, Inc., the emergency medical control authority for Western
Wayne County.
